BLOG ENTRY 9

Write now I am currently learning to change the mouse cursor for my piece from the typical mouse arrow to a spray can which will make the piece more identifiable with someone tagging the wall.
The file above will be used to do this. I am also adding sound effects to the opening page of the application so that the user can click hidden links and attribute them with different sounds.

BLOG ENTRY 12 : BLUR

What I learned in action script today was how to add a blur filter. In my project I am making a spray paint application that allows the user  to change the surface of different walls and spray on the walls with their the virtual spray paint. When I began making this the paint came out of the can just looked like circles and was not quite polished enough to look as though it came from a spray can however when the Professor showed me how to tweak the code we were able to set it up so that the spray paint came out of the can with a blurred effect.

BLOG ENTRY 14

I have learned a great deal from this course because this was the first time I have ever really used flash. I took a course in flash once in my undergrad but it focussed more on dreamweaver rather than flash.
This course definitely helped me understand the basics of flash and the setup, such as using the timeline and learning about the different frames and functions such as symbols, movie clips etc. The class also helped me understand the basics of action scripting however some of the process was much to complicated in the short time that we have in class.

My critique from the class is that more class time be focussed on learning the action scripting and less open sessions. I think it would be easier to learn if there were several small assignments that everyone had to do as a sort of tutorial and then after that we would use these tutorials to make our alpha project.

BLOG ENTRY 13: GUEST ARTISTS

Repsonse to visiting guest artists

I was very interested in the work by our visiting artist Yuliya Lanina because she i was able to see how her process of creating art has changed over the years due to the use of digital systems however she does not use the new tool as a crutch but as a new way for her to showcase her fine art  background in painting.

As a Pratt student I sometimes feel that the school looks to much to new interactive media with big wide eyes because it is new or different but it is lacking substance and I feel that Yuliyas peace is not just a fancy new way to show her work and that it has practical reasons for why she has chosen this new media.

Pieres work was good to see as well because he showed how a mind map can help ones thought process and simplify the work that you have to do later if it is all layed out previously. I always appreciate seeing visiting artists because they give me a perspective of what options I have for myself post graduate school and Pratt.

BLOG ENTRY 11 : NOTES FOR FLASH DESIGNER

I would like to create a system that allows the user to grab a spray paint can and allows the user to spray on the way view their touch screen device and their mouse on various walls. Also another student had a great idea to expand on this idea that would allow the user to tag other websites by throwing up a fake screen over the website and allows the user to draw graffiti overtop of a website they love and save and send the screenshot to their friends.

I also want to create a gallery that allows the user to pinpoint a location of a particular artwork perhaps by using google maps which could be integrated into the program but if not that I would just like to create a gallery of images with the location and fake the functionality.

BLOG POST 8 | JSTCHILLEN

I had never heard of jstchillen so before I read the article I decided to go to the website and see what it was all about and thought it was hilarious to see a giant Justin Bieber head on the screen saying that the site was hacked by him. With this as the start of my journey I had no idea what to expect.
I think that the site is clever because it is video art that allows the users to create multiple spaces which reminded me a bit similar to Second Life which helps me understand the relevance and how big of an internet based art community is truly out there.
There is a very 80's quality and aesthetic to the site which I feel ads to this new movement that is taking place with internet art.

BLOG ENTRY 7 | THIERRY GUETTA

This is the free for all post where I wanted to mention the artist Mr. Brainwash. I first learned of Mr. Brainwash through the Banksy film entitled, "Exit Through the Giftshop". Thierry was a documentarian turned artist who learned street art through following a numerous amount of subjects.
Thierry assumes the name of Mr. Brainwash and his work is pop art mixed with street art. Because he does not actually create the work his ability is up for question and I feel that his flash website reflects his persona. It is full of scattered buttons which that are full of little surprises which is something that i am trying to do with my piece by adding in additional hidden buttons.
While the site is functional it also has this unprofessional type of quality that I feel it has going for it.

Here is the website

CLASS CRITIQUE

I have not had my class critique yet, and am scheduled to present on Monday, March 28th. Based on the other students presentations though, I feel I have a very solid idea and appear to be the only person working my project as a website and phone application to guide users to street art rather than creating a gallery piece. Based on the previous feedback from the class however I think that the piece would benefit for a more interactive experience which is why I am building the site to have the graffiti application as well as tailoring certain musical styles and icons to fit the piece.

BLOG ENTRY 06: FUNCTIONALITY IN BLOG

There are several types of functionality that I am interested in pursuing for my blog, and I am currently exploring different websites and tutorials to attain my endeavors. Here is a list of the functionality that I am looking to include in my blog.
1. A cursor that is not simply just a hand but can take the form of any object for example of a spray or a skateboard.
2. I want a small movie clips that will play after each button is clicked and link to the next section of the project. For example a skateboard riding down the street would link into the game or a spray can being shaken could lead to the gallery.
3. A fully functional photo gallery images for the project.
4.  A spray can app which allows the user to have to shake the app in order to get the paint out and a virtual wall that users are able to draw on and send the imagery that they create on the app network as well as other social networks such as facebook, twitter, etc.

SKATE

BLOG ENTRY 5 | Robbie Cooper Link

Robbie Coopers project is something similar that I have studied in the past in a project I exhibited while doing my undergrad at CSUSM that was entitled evolution 2.0. The theory behind it came from a class I took entitled Theories in Cyberspace where our professor also had us make a character in Second Life and each of the students were put into groups and had to do a performance in class with our characters. For my project I simulated a human being stuck in a machine and was then forced to live through the machine as a sort of distopian view of the future of humans and electronic.

I contrast this view with Coopers project where such as Alter Ego which shows more of a utopian type view that has a positive immersion between humans and machines. For example each of the people were able to change their appearance to how they wanted to be, if you are sick you could become strong, if you were a man but didn't want to be in real life you could assume the role of a woman. This resonated as a piece about identity and a positive outlook on how technology can shape our future The second piece took a different turn to see how this immersion with the screen particularly with war video games can impact the kids views on war and the reality of war.

I think that Robbie's research is commendable as he is examining both the postive and negative effects of the issue.

BLOG POST 4.5 | BETA BRAINSTORM 2

Brainstorming for your BETA Project - Post a 250-500 word description of your beta project idea. Whatever you are thinking at this point IS NOT SET IN STONE. This is your first brainstorm session. (This can be culled from Blog Entry notes & ephemera). **However, this is still a professional proposal. Please pay attention to spelling and grammar. Points to address:
1) Form : Are you thinking of a mobile, small-screen application? a non-linear narrative or documentary? a game? an experimental artwork? an application linked to live performance?
2) Content : What needs, interests, political causes, or commercial interests are you motivated to address? What makes your idea unique? Are you going to produce a nonlinear narrative, an interactive painting, or a service, an entertainment, an education, or some other platform?
3) Who are your viewers/users/audience? Create a demographic.
4) Little Picture|Big Picture - Conceptualize both in terms of what you think you can produce in a 15 week semester and the potential you see for this idea down the road (when you have more time, resources, assistants and backing).
1. I am now thinking to change my beta project to a mobile application that will allow users to connect with the street art throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn on an easy level. The technology would be wither to either locate your position in the city and based off of this direct you to the street art that is available in your area. It would also include an improved version of the game I made from my previous version. This would stand as an application that would provide a service to is users who are interested in seeing different forms of street art.

2. This project will meet the needs of users who are interested and finding out more about the types of street art that they can view and will provide insight as to what the artwork is about , where it was found etc. There will also be a game included in this application as well as an interactive component that would allow the user to take hold of a virtual spray can and paint with it on the application and then share their designs with their friends.

3. The demographic that I am trying to reach is a young audience 18-30 who are interested in non traditional art forms and are interested in street art. While this could apply to anyone I want the look and feel to be very precise and streamlined for a younger audience. I also am targeting specifically a NY audience because that is the art that I will be referring to however there is room for this idea to grow and spread to other cities such as Los Angeles.

4. The little picture is that I am able to complete both the interactive spray can component and the concept of the locating your position for certain neighborhoods in Brooklyn. The big picture is that this is a fully functional app that could also potentially spread to other cities and then worldwide. While this is my first time working with flash I am not very well versed in the coding languange so I am more focussed on making something that works rather than trying to add to many components to the piece that would end in failure so my main mission is to gather the photos of the art and pursue this for the neighborhoods in Brooklyn of Clinton Hill, Park Slope, and Williamsburg and in The East Village and Soho in Manhattan.

BLOG POST 4 | BETA BRAINSTORM

Brainstorming for your BETA Project - Post a 250-500 word description of your beta project idea. Whatever you are thinking at this point IS NOT SET IN STONE. This is your first brainstorm session. (This can be culled from Blog Entry notes & ephemera). **However, this is still a professional proposal. Please pay attention to spelling and grammar. Points to address:
1) Form : Are you thinking of a mobile, small-screen application? a non-linear narrative or documentary? a game? an experimental artwork? an application linked to live performance?

4) Little Picture|Big Picture - Conceptualize both in terms of what you think you can produce in a 15 week semester and the potential you see for this idea down the road (when you have more time, resources, assistants and backing).

1. I have chosen to embrace my original idea for the project and stick with either a mobile or web based application called FITNY. This would contain an application that would serve several functions. FITNY (Fit NY) is a new revolutionary app that is geared towards the New Yorker who is looking to make a positive change to their health and lifestyle by providing helpful tips on diet, exercise, and meditation. It also offers a calorie counter, health store satellite tracking, and coupon incentives throughout the five burroughs (at participating retailers) upon completion of fitness goals.
2.
I was motivated by my own eating habits, because they have dramatically changed since I left California. NY is a fast paced city and everyone is constantly on the goes so finding healthy foods and eating right is hard to maintain. I realized that I was not only gaining weight but feeling less healthy and less active. This is also based on the alarming statistics also that America is the most obese state so I want to do something to change this. I want it to aesthetically look very professional and would prefer it to look more functional and easy to use rather than something that is complex and artistic.
3.
The demographic that I am trying to reach are people that are health concious or trying to be health concious. This would not be limited however to  a certain type of person and would be easily used by anyone and everyone that is interested in living a healthier lifestyle could use this app.
4.
The little picture for me would to be able to build anything functinal that works in flash as i have no experience in flash and little experience in illustrator. Just to be able to have a functional application with working buttons. The big picture for this project would be to create an iphone app that actually would help people locate health food sources.

BLOG ENTRY 3| MAP PART DEUX

For the upcoming project I think that I willl branch off from this original idea to do something that is more related to the art work that I am interested in. While I feel that this piece is important I want to do something that has move of a basis within my work and is something that i am more interested in so as of right now I am thinking of something more regarding graffiti art.

BLOG POST 2 | FLOWCHART

For my flow chart I wanted to focus on an outcome that I face everyday on my stop to Bergen Bagels and their ordering process. However I wanted to see how things were handled from their aspect rather than from my POV so I watched as the team came together to assemble an order. Their seems to be 3 different choices in the morning which were coffee, bagel, or both. I kept this simple for the original storyboard, but would like to revise this with additional items such as what choices one has to put on the bagel. Whether or not they want cream and sugar for example. This will help make the ordering process more quick and efficient.

BLOG POST 1 | 5 Images and descriptions

This interaction was viewed at Bergen Bagels on Myrtle Ave. The people must work together in a factory line setting each completing a certain task in order to process the order quickly and efficiently. While one man pours the coffee and puts the ream and sugar in it, the next man begins getting the bagel ready, putting it in the oven and putting cream cheese on it. Finally he bags it and is brought to the cashier so that I can pay for it. I noticed that without multiple employees or this factory like system this process would take much longer.
This mans interaction is with the traffic sign and the bus. On a snowy cold day there is nothing worse than being stuck outside longer waiting for traffic to clear. The traffic sign has a red hand to show that he is not allowed to cross. The bus is preventing him from crossing the street.

I saw this interaction when I was going to the grocery store. The two men are interacting with each other and the elements outside after going to the grocery store.

This man is interacting with the gate outside of his store and is in the process of lifting the barricade. This was a tedious process for him as  he has to put the pole in a specific place in order to trigger the opening of the gate. After performing this he wiped of the windows and was ready for a days work.
This person is interacting with both his bike and with the traffic. He is riding his bike down myrtle avenue in a pursuit to get to his destination and is interacting with his bike and the weather in a race to get there. He is also interacting with traffic as he has chosen to ride his bike on the street. He must now keep with the pace of traffic to create a safe riding environment.
